On Sunday night, replacing Game of Thrones, the new highly anticipated show “The Deuce” premiered. This show is about the rise of the porn industry in the 1970’s. The first episode focused greatly on making a background and a well rounded story. David Simon and George Pelecanos the writers of the show worked on “The Wire,” “Treme,” and many other shows that made HBO what it is today.
While the first episode was not the most climactic it did introduce the audience to the characters. As most shows written by Simon the action will not start for a while. The characters are interesting and Maggie Gyllenhaal was a feminist in a very different time. The show’s first episode was only a taste of what is to come.
The show’s first episode focused on the how the first porn stars were prostitutes. Gyllenhaals character talks about how the stars get no royalties, proving she is not just a pretty face in the background of the show. This brings the show into the new social changes going on during this time. One thing the show makes clear? Sex is power. Men and women use it to their advantage and the show takes an interesting spin on a subject that was taboo for far too long.
Watch The Deuce Sundays at 12pm on HBO.
