Marvel has begun publishing a four-part comic book miniseries, Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi — Captain PhasmaIts aim is to try to bridge the gap between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi and at the same time tell the story of what happened to Captain Phasma during and after the destruction of Starkiller Base.

This comes as a bit of a relief for the fans since Captain Phasma sadly fell into the grand tradition of Star Wars characters looking cool and doing very little.

The interesting part of this comic is that it takes the form of a contemporaneous audio log, one that Phasma is creating over the course of the comic. There are two narratives at play, however. The first are the words that Phasma is putting on the record, and the second are her actual actions on the scene. It reveals a woman who will do whatever it takes to maintain her reputation and her status within the First Order. What’s more, the gulf between her report and her actions adds a welcome touch of irony to the conflict.

Artist Marco Checchetto, who has already worked on the great Obi-Wan and Anakin series, gives dynamic life to every moment Phasma takes up on the page. His style tends to give her a tremendous sense of movement and grace despite her armor appearing like it could possibly inhibit her actions.

While the comic doesn’t attempt to delve into Phasma’s past or background it still manages to illuminate the character through her actions. Combine this with the gorgeous artwork and this makes for a worthwhile read for any Star Wars fan.
