All the chaos of SDCC 2017 has died down, and with so many new and exciting panels to read about it’s easy to forget our tried-and-true favourite: good ol’ Spongebob. Despite the show running for such a long time (1999), Spongebob still proves to have a massive fan base, the room was packed. The panel started off with a live table-read of the classic episode, Shanghaied, a fan-selected favourite. The cast included Tom Kenny (Spongebob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), and Brian Doyle Murray (Flying Dutchman).

Shortly after, fans were treated to a sneak peek of the new Spongebob stop-motion Halloween special, set to premiere October 2017.

Making a stop-motion film is no easy task, and the episode is said to have included:

– 27 sets

– 8 pounds of glitter

– hundreds of Popsicle sticks to create a roller-caster track

– 15 boxes of cereal to create texture for the underwater environment

-black lights used to create that spooky glow that every Halloween movie needs

We’ll have to wait until October until the Legend of Boo-kini Bottom airs, but considering nearly all of the previous Spongebob specials (Ugh, Atlantis Squarpantis, Party Pooper Pants) have become instant classics, fans should have high expectations for what’s to come.
