Hey gamers! Do you remember the hilarious, clever, but ultimately informative review I did on the original Destiny? No? Well you can read about it here, and find some joy in my delightful take on the game! once you’re done catching up on that, you can read this, which goes into detail over Destiny 2! Now, I’ve got to say that upon Pre-ordering this game at Gamestop and gaining access to the beta code, I had yet to see a trailer or hear much about this sequel. With that in mind, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect when the beta opened on July 19, 2017. While the detail and definition is…VASTLY better than its predecessor, (which is saying something major), I honestly had no clue how they were going to push this story forward.
Like the first of its’ name, Destiny 2 allows you the option of choosing a class – whether it be Titan, Hunter, or Warlock. If you need a refresher on those class types, I’ve listed the classes as they’re described in the game:
Titan: “Disciplined and proud, Titans are capable of both aggressive assaults and stalwart defenses.” Their Go-To Leader is Zavala.
Hunter: “Agile and daring, Hunters are quick on their feet and quicker on the draw.” Their Go-To Leader is Cayde.
Warlock: “Warlocks weaponize the mysteries of the universe to sustain themselves and devastated their foes.” Their Go-To Leader is Ikora.
While I was first upset that the beta didn’t allow the customization of your Class, (species and looks wise), I soon realized that there was a reason behind it, and that reason was the intro story. Be warned, if you want to keep out of the spoilers of this game until it’s released, don’t read any further. The game opens with Cayde joining Ikora and Zavala in an emergency. The comms have gone down, defenses around the skyline have gone dark – not to mention the satellite systems are….well completely gone. As Zavala peers out the window, through the storm-clouds an armada appears. In an attempt to save lives, Zavala deploys a shield, but it does little: The armada destroys the Tower which many guardians call home and it’s obvious that the mystery attackers are heading for The Traveler.
As you approach the city, your Ghost is trying in vain to get in contact with someone, but to no avail. Upon arrival, you find your Tower in ruins, and many of your people slaughtered, and the Cabal lurking everywhere. But these aren’t just any Cabal – they’re called the Red Legion, and they’re, as Ikora puts it, “Deathly loyal to their leader.” You soon find yourself face to face with their leader, a dangerous and giant being known as Ghaul. He goes on a rant about how the guardians aren’t necessarily brave, but that they’ve just forgotten how to fear death. After seemingly destroying The Traveler, he Spartan kicks your character off of the edge of his ship, where you plummet to your demise.
The gameplay for Destiny 2 is ultimately the same, and really the only thing that’s changed is the story, but holy SHIT what a change. If you weren’t planning on getting the game before, maybe my thoughts on it – as well as the gallery of photos I’ve included below! (Screenshotted and pulled directly from the game) – will change your mind. Destiny 2 releases September 6, 2017, so be sure to save up and prepare to defend yourself, because it looks like the Guardians are going extinct.
