For (self-proclaimed) television connoisseurs such as myself, nothing is more invigorating & nerve-racking than Emmy season. The fact is, television these days is good. Like really, really good. And the Emmys is the place where the best of the best hash it out, and water cooler debate scores are settled once and for all.

Outstanding Drama Series

“Better Call Saul”
“The Crown”
“The Handmaid’s Tale”
“House of Cards”
“Stranger Things”
“This Is Us”
“Westworld”
My Pick: HANDMAID’S TALE
This is a tough category, no doubt about it. The biggest one, too. Better Call Saul and This Is Us have an uphill climb here competing against huge streaming services like Netflix & Hulu. And yes, Netflix did pull off some hits this year with Stranger Things and The Crown, but I think Hulu’s taking it home.

My Pick:
MASTER OF NONE
Master of None came out swinging this year and boy did it deliver! If season 1 was good then season 2 was EXCELLENT! Aziz Ansari is impossible to dislike and the style of this show is unlike anything else. Oh and did I mention it’s HILARIOUS?!

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Sterling K. Brown, “This Is Us”
Anthony Hopkins, “Westworld”
Bob Odenkirk, “Better Call Saul”
Matthew Rhys, “The Americans”
Liev Schreiber, “Ray Donovan”
Kevin Spacey, “House of Cards”
Milo Ventimiglia, “This Is Us”
My Pick: KEVIN SPACEY
Would it be nice for this award to go to fresh face? Yes. But as it stands Kevin Spacey is a freaking rockstar.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Viola Davis, “How to Get Away With Murder”
Claire Foy, “The Crown”
Elisabeth Moss, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Keri Russell, “The Americans”
Evan Rachel Wood, “Westworld”
Robin Wright, “House of Cards”
My Pick: EVAN RACHEL WOOD
If you didn’t like Westworld as a series that’s perfectly ok. To tell you the truth, I didn’t care for it much. But one thing is undeniable — Evan Rachel Wood can act! This girl had to switch between a pre-programed sweet southern belle and an emotionless robot, and every stage in between. And she nailed it!

Zach Galifianakis, “Baskets”
Donald Glover, “Atlanta”

Read above statement about Master of None. Though I wouldn’t be surprised to see this award go to Donald Glover!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”
Tracee Ellis Ross, “Black-ish”

Another tough category (because they’re all hilarious), but I’m giving my vote to the queen of the political comedy scene! Well… besides Kate McKinnon.

Outstanding Limited Series

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series

Riz Ahmed, “The Night Of”
Benedict Cumberbatch, “Sherlock: The Lying Detective”
Robert De Niro, “The Wizard of Lies”
Ewan McGregor, “Fargo”
Geoffrey Rush, “Genius”
John Turturro, “The Night Of”
My Pick: BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH
Look, if you’ve spent 5 minutes in a room with me, or opened my Twitter account on any given day, you’d know that Benedict Cumberbatch has my heart and soul and that Sherlock is my favorite show of all time. Now, that being said — we all know what a trainwreck Sherlock S4 was (need I pull this out again?: https://thegameofnerds.com/2017/02/05/an-open-essay-to-the-creators-of-sherlock/), but The Lying Detective was really fun (heartbreaking?) and above all, Benedict Cumberbatch stood his ground as one the current most sought-after celebs. This is easily Ben C.’s best performance ever (and I would know, I’ve watched him in everything), and he deserves this win even though S4 on the whole was a disaster.

Carrie Coon, “Fargo”
Felicity Huffman, “American Crime”
Nicole Kidman, “Big Little Lies”
Jessica Lange, “Feud: Bette and Joan”
Susan Sarandon, “Feud: Bette and Joan”
Reese Witherspoon, “Big Little Lies”
My Pick: REESE WITHERSPOON
Hollywood’s golden girl strikes again! Reese Witherspoon gave a really brilliant performance in her television debut, and an Emmy win would mean a lot for her up and down career.

Outstanding Variety Talk Series

“Full Frontal With Samantha Bee”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”
“The Late Late Show With James Corden”
“The Late Show With Stephen Colbert”
“Real Time With Bill Maher”
My Pick: LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN
James Corden has recently been the man of the (late night) hour, and for good reason. He’s a fun host with great segments, his most popular being Carpool Karaoke, which is getting it’s own show.

Outstanding Reality-Competition Program

“The Amazing Race”
“American Ninja Warrior”
“Project Runway”
“RuPaul’s Drag Race”
“Top Chef”
“The Voice”
My Pick: RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE
A reality-competition show about drag queens should win every award. All of them. Ever.
