After months and months of agonizing over whether the newest attempt at bringing the famous New York City Web-Slinger to life would be worth it, Spider-Man: Homecoming has finally hit theaters. Fans all over the globe went into the movies with trepidation – especially when all that comes to mind for them are the previous Spider-Man movies, but rest-assured my friends, THIS is the Spider-Man movie we’ve waited 15 years to see. Before I get into what makes this movie so fantastic, let’s travel back to 2002, where times were simple, where there’s an actual gif of Mary Jane Watson holding onto a Spider-Man mannequin as she swings through the air…where Tobey Maguire was said to be a wonderful portrayal of the infamous Spider-Man. There were dozens of things wrong with this movie, but there were also things right about it. You’ll never find a better J. Jameson than J.K. Simmons, let’s be honest. Willem Dafoe was born to be a villain, he’s just got the crazy grin for it. But let’s also be honest about this – everyone in that movie looked like they were 30+ Years old. Hell, everyone was damn near that age when they were cast. It just didn’t feel right to play a fifteen year old kid when you were literally 27 at the time of casting.

Now don’t get me wrong, there is a large fan-base for the Tobey Maguire movies, but I just couldn’t find them fitting of Spider-Man. It came a little closer when Andrew Garfield was cast in The Amazing Spider-Man, I mean he just had the proper snark for it. But still, he looked old enough to be in his junior year of college, NOT a Sophmore-Senior in high school. Then we come to Tom Holland – which yes, I am aware that the young Hollywood star is 21 years old, but he’s still got the looks to play a fifteen year old kid who’d just come into some amazing and dangerous powers. Everyone in the cast looked like they could still be in high school, and that’s what we need! Accurate portrayals mean better story-telling, and better story-telling means a better movie. Regardless, each movie is wonderful in it’s on way, but Spider-Man: Homecoming is the best thus far, in my opinion. Now, let’s get into why this movie is so damn great!

The story-line: If you’ve read any one of my articles, you’ll know that I’m a sucker for a good story, and this was the perfect one. As a fifteen year old, Peter Parker is struggling enough, but having super-human capabilities that put him on the Avengers’ radar? It’s a whole new level of pressure. Now he’s having to deal with an arms dealer trying to sell alien-based weapons to the everyday thugs of Queens. It’s the perfect mixture of humor, drama, and good ol’ hand-to-web combat that fans are looking for. To top it off, the CGI was absolutely amazing. Now, there were a few easter eggs in the movie that I’m going to let loose, but be warned there are potential spoilers coming. (I’ll keep them as tame as possible, I swear – I wouldn’t ruin your lives like that.)

Now, as you’ll remember from Captain America: Civil War, Tony Stark made Spider-Man’s suit, and as you’ll recall in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Tony successfully creates artificial intelligence when he puts J.A.R.V.I.S into the body of an android and produces the superhero Vision. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter’s suit is outfitted with its’ own AI, one he decides to call Karen. In all of the movies featuring J.A.R.V.I.S, Paul Bettany (Legion, A Knight’s Tale) voices him – and eventually portrays Vision. Karen, however, is voiced by Jennifer Connelly (Labyrinth) who happens to be Mr. Bettany’s wife in real life. How freaking cute is that?! What’s more is, if you’ll pay close attention to the music listings in the credits, you’ll notice a song called “Maximum Effort,” by Kill The Giant. If you’re a big enough Marvel fan, you’ll catch on that the phrase “Maximum Effort” is Deadpool’s catch phrase. Spidey and Deadpool are commonly portrayed as the best of buddies, and fans often portray them as a romantic couple.
Stan Lee, faithful as ever, makes a cameo early on in the movie, so be sure to look for it immediately, and like with every solid Marvel film, there’s an end credits scene afterward – actually, there are TWO end credits scenes. The first one comes right before the final credits roll, and (Potential Spoiler) could be a nod to the Sinister Six, a dastardly group of villains that try to go up against the Web-Slinger. The second one is…well…just send us a message after the second one, because I would LOVE to hear what you think of it. All in All, I have nothing but absolute adoration for this film, and it gets two thumbs WAY up! Check it out in theaters now, and as always, thanks for reading!
