Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon is a novel about an 18 year old girl with SCID (“basically I’m allergic to the world”), so I was ready to lump it with The Fault in Our Stars. This book had been on my radar for a while (along with another book by Nicola Yoon – The Sun is Also a Star), but I’ve been hesitant to pick it up due to the recent popularization of “sick lit.” I’ve been burned out on vampire and dystopian novels, and surely the day will come when I need a break from sick lit, as well.
If you don’t know by now, Everything, Everything has been made into a movie and will be hitting theaters soon, with Amandla Stenberg (Rue from The Hunger Games) starring as our protagonist, Madeline Whittier. As soon as I saw Amandla in that trailer, I felt a flash of excitement and I read the book a few days later.
This was such a fun read, which was very unexpected. Maddy is one of the most adorable creatures on the planet as we watch her crush on the boy next door, fall in love, and experience a life that is bigger than her bubble of a house. This would be a good book to help you get back into reading if it’s been a while since you’ve picked up a book. The chapters are short and so are the paragraphs in general. There are pages of instant messaging, and fake charts and diagrams (as shown below), which make it an even quicker read.

It’s fairly light and simple, and it honestly made me laugh out loud on multiple occasions. It’s just cute. Of course, it’s Young Adult, and the main character has little life experience, so expect naïveté. For sick lit, you’d expect it to eventually crush you, so if you’ve stayed away in fear of that — the ending isn’t really sad.
