You may not have heard, but Marvel has another show coming out. No, not Iron Fist. Not The Punisher either. Not The Defenders, The Runaways, or The Inhumans. They are adapting superhero couple Cloak & Dagger. Let’s break down the series and what we can look forward to.

In the comics, Tyrone “Ty” Johnson is a young boy from Boston with a stutter. After failing to stop the police from killing his friend in the wake of a convenience store robbery they didn’t commit, Ty runs away from home and ends up homeless in New York. Meanwhile, in Shaker Heights, Tandy Bowen is rich; but her life is empty. Her famous mom treats her more like an accessory than a daughter – that is, if she remembers she has a daughter at all. Tandy runs away from home and ends up homeless in New York.

Desperate, Ty sees the rich-looking Tandy and decides to steal her purse – but is beat to the punch by a street thug who takes it first. Ty chases down the criminal retrieves Tandy’s purse, introducing himself and cementing their new friendship. Tandy is offered a place to stay by some shady looking men, and Ty comes along to protect her. Next thing they know, the pair are being pumped full of experimental drug D-Lite,  manufactured as a heroin substitute by the criminal underground!

The drugs have extreme side effects; Ty is engulfed in darkness and has a powerful hunger that is only satiated when Tandy – now glowing with light – is near. Discovering they now harness the power of Darkforce and Lifeforce respectively, they form new identities: Ty becomes “Cloak” and can teleport, create fields of darkness, become intangible, and transport people to the Darkforce Dimension (remember Agent Carter?) all through the black billowing folds of his cloak. Tandy is “Dagger” and wields daggers of light, that can illuminate but most importantly manipulate Lifeforce itself – she can use her daggers to stun, kill, or sap life – or she can heal and detoxify. They use their new powers to wage a war on organized crime, and more importantly drugs.

Now, in the series, this all seems very different. Both Ty and Tandy live in New Orleans, where the show is set. Tandy (Olivia Holt) is a petty thief with her boyfriend after her house was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina; Ty (Aubrey Joseph) is a sheltered and closed-off boy with an overprotective mother. Will their origin be the same?
