What We Know About Pacific Rim: Uprising

2013 marks the year where we first meet Jaegers. They are a staple of Japanese anime, where they are often referred to as mecha. Similar to many mecha anime series, Jaegers are controlled from within by human pilots, distinguishing them from other depictions of robots as automated, sentient, or externally controlled. But the Jaegers are not present in any anime, but in the movie Pacific Rim. For all the fans out there we have some good news because the sequel is set for release in 2018 and here is what we know so far.

1. Previous Movie
In the previous movie from 2013, monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from an interdimensional portal on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was created: massive robots called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenceless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. Focusing on the war’s later days, the story follows Raleigh Becket, a washed-up Jaeger pilot called out of retirement and teamed with rookie pilot Mako Mori as part of a last-ditch effort to defeat the Kaiju With a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

2. The Story
The story for the upcoming movie is still not known at this point, but in an interview, Guillermo del Toro, the director and writer, talked about the setting for this movie. He says: “It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.”

He also said that Dr Newton Geiszler(Charlie Day) & Gottlieb (Burn Gorman) are reprising their characters in the sequel. Later it was reported that Charlie Hunnam won’t be returning as Raleigh Becket.

3. The Cast
John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, the son of Stacker Pentecost(Idris Elba) from the original movie.
