Of course, I do like the holidays, but nothing beats the feeling of knowing that your favorite tv show is only a few days away! During the holidays you don’t have much time to think about it, but as soon as January comes into sight you realize you are missing one notable piece in your Monday evenings: Gotham. That means that Charlie and I, your trustworthy Gotham news reporters, are back in action! To give you some head up, and make you truly excited for Gotham’s return, here’s some news I’ve collected about the return of Gotham…

Remember what happened before the midseason finale? Jim Gordon shot his ex-girlfriend Dr Leslie “Lee” Thompkin’s new husband, Dr Mario Falcone, in an attempt to save her life. That would be a problem on its own, but she never knew that he had been infected with Jervis Tetch’s (Benedict Samuel) blood and was already attempting to kill her out of jealousy. That doesn’t sound like a good start for Gordon in the new episodes. Mainly because the official synopsis says that Falcone places a hit on Gordon after learning that he shot Mario. Oh boy, does that mean that Gotham’s biggest crime boss is back in action? I do remember Gordon promising to Falcone not to kill Mario. But he clearly didn’t keep his promise. So kids, don’t break your promises, or else you’ll be hunted down by some serious bad guys.

Speaking of bad guys, I’m sure you remember one of the most iconic characters from last season: Jerome. In August, Executive Producer John Stephens confirmed that Jerome would return, though he didn’t explain how the murderous character would be resurrected. Stephens said that they are definitely going to bring the Joker back, but not in the way fans expect. He also said that Jerome’s return will be built-up over the second-half of Season 3, but his actual return would be saved for a possible Season 4.

He also said that right now you have these underground movements that have started to talk about Jerome and what he represented and how he’s going to come back. We’ve already seen one of those underground movements in the second half of the second season, where Bruce tries to find the murderer of his parents. We’ll probably see one of those movements again as Gordon and Bullock discover a follower of Jerome, who plans to bring him back to life. Add to that the mysterious picture Cameron Monaghan posted on his Instagram featuring Dr. Lee Thompkins uncovering Jerome’s dead body. If that doesn’t predict something good, then I’m all out of ideas. Of course, I already knew that Jerome would return this season, I even wrote a post about it here.

While all the fans are eager for the return of the possible Joker, One character from the show won’t be too happy with his return – Penguin. Robin Lord Taylor, who plays Oswald Cobblepot, said that Penguin and the Joker definitely won’t get along, so they will be on opposing sides. “Joker represents anarchy, whereas Penguin is all about there [being] an order to everything,” he told Yahoo! TV. “He’s not interested in tearing things down. He’s not interested in anarchy at all,” Taylor further explained, adding that this is the reason why Penguin and the cops often find common ground. “There’s something identifiable in his madness.”

Luckily for him, Penguin doesn’t have to worry much about the Joker at this time. Because before he has to give the biggest television interview of his Mayoral career, he spirals out of control. All according to the synopsis. Maybe this has something to do with the betrail from Nygma because Penguin killed his girlfriend and now is working together with Barbara, Tabitha and Butch. Looks like Penguin is losing more and more friends by the minute.

For the next half of the season, Gordon will be back in touch with his Uncle Frank, played by James Remar. Apparently, this uncle is a master at playing both sides and a man who knows how to keep a secret. Frank abandoned the family after Jim’s father’s fatal car crash and now, 25 years later, he’s returned to Gotham to reconnect with his estranged nephew. Of course, nothing happens in Gotham City without reason. Frank harbours a dark secret, one that will upset the very foundations of Jim’s world and force him into a terrible choice between saving his family and saving his city. And I thought that losing his girlfriend to a maniacal doctor was already a lot for Gordon to handle.

Someone else that will deal with some sort of family reunion is Selina. In the midseason finale, we saw someone saving her, Bruce and Alfred from The Court of Owls building, only to discover that it was Selina’s mum, played by Ivana Milicevic. It’s evident who Selina takes after since Maria is described as “a tough-as-nails operator with an arsenal of street smarts.” She is also a world-class drifter who has the ability to hide her true self behind a plethora of personas. She is a “criminal through and through” and will stop at nothing to get what she wants. However, Maria has a weakness: her daughter. Maria feels guilty for abandoning Selina, the only person in the world she truly loves.

The last new, even recurring, character we will see in this season is played by Raymond J. Barry. He’ll take on the role as the Temple Shaman, a mysterious figure who enters Bruce’s life with the stated intention of unlocking the potential of his own mind. While the Shaman says the fate of Gotham depends upon Bruce becoming the man the city needs him to become, the truth behind his intentions proves to be far more sinister. It seems like the weird guys can’t stay away from our Bruce.

Now I’m only left with one big question, what happened to Fish? Although she isn’t one of my favourite characters, I still hope we see her again. To me, it feels like there isn’t much closure with her running away with Hugo Strange and then not returning the entire season.
