It’s winter hiatus time, and that means friends, family, and repeats. With such a plethora of options these days, it can be overwhelming to find a new show to watch. And with making merry with our families, it can be tough to squeeze in a ‘Buffy’ or ‘Bones’ binge.

Here is a list of great shows, new and older, that are under three seasons long for you to binge during winter hiatus and holiday break:

Westworld (HBO)

Holy shit, is this a beautiful series. Taken from the 1973 movie written by Michael Crichton, this ten episode first season is about a futuristic, completely immersive theme park set in the Wild West and the people who work with the lifelike “hosts” that inhabit it. It’s engaging and suspenseful, so make sure you have the day set aside. Also Anthony Hopkins, James Marsters, and Thandie Newton are in it. ‘Nuff said.

Pitch (FOX, Hulu)

This ten episode first season of the Fox drama is about the first woman in Major League Baseball. More than just a show about baseball, the dynamics, characters’ interactions, and relationships are definitely worth tuning in. I think I’ve watched this season at least twice already. If you’re missing baseball (and honestly, even if you don’t give a shit about baseball), grab a beer and enjoy!

The Man in the High Castle (Amazon)

What if the Axis had won the war? That is the alternate universe the Amazon show (based off Philip K. Dick’s novel) explores. Season Two is released on December 16th, so now is the perfect time to binge the ten episode first season! It’s a chilling show, especially given the current political climate.

Catastrophe (Amazon)

If you’re looking for something fun to watch while wrapping gifts, then check out Catastrophe. Its two six episode seasons are hilarious and touching. It’s about two people who have a one-week stand and of course it doesn’t end when one gets on a plane. My sister convinced me to watch it and I don’t regret it even a little.

Casual (hulu)

A show about a bachelor and his newly divorced sister living together again and raising her daughter, Casual takes an irreverent look at dating and relationships. It’s self-deprecating and insecure, it’s highly enjoyable and relatable. If you think your family is fucked up… I’m just saying. And clocking in at just 23 half hour episodes, a quick and addictive winter break watch!

Firefly (Netflix, hulu)

If I’m being honest, I can’t make a list or any recommendation without adding Firefly. The Joss Whedon cult classic that was canceled too soon is one of my all-time favorite shows. Set 500 years in the future after a massive war, the show follows a Captain and his crew in an amazing Space Opera that I have seen too many times to count. It’s only 14 episodes, but you will fall in love. And then you’ll watch the movie, Serenity.

(If a show **ahem** Stranger Things **ahem** isn’t on here, most likely it’s because it’s on my binge watching list!!)

There are so many more shows than are on this list and will probably have to make several more, but here was just a few quick and dirty binges.
