Meredith killed her budding romance with Riggs after Maggie confessed her feelings for the fellow cardio surgeon. (There were a lot of missteps and uncertainty of what she should do, but finally Meredith just straight up said no to Riggs.)

DeLuca pressed assault charges on Alex for what happened in the finale. Alex spent the first half of season 13 working in the Denny Duquette Clinic and struggling with his place as a doctor instead of a surgeon. The trial date was set, but on the finale, Alex decided to take a plea bargain for 2 years of jail time (but Meredith might have talked him out of it. We last see Alex before he officially accepts the deal). I would be very surprised if Alex actually goes to prison, but hey, maybe he will and we’ll get some sort of spin-off where he works as a doctor in the prison. By this point, we know the show isn’t shy about time jumps, so that’s always a possibility.

Jo spent the past 9 episodes having nothing to do with Alex. She couldn’t face him after seeing him beat DeLuca almost to death (when DeLuca hadn’t done anything wrong. A fact that Alex didn’t realize at the time). She finally told Alex that the reason she couldn’t accept his proposal last season was because she’s already married, and that she can’t divorce her husband because she can’t give him the opportunity to find her, and that she was afraid about testifying in his trial for the same reasons (which is what provoked Alex to take the plea and not put her through any of that).

In a dull plot twist, Leah Murphy was rehired as a resident. There’s some awkwardness with her return, but she’s mainly there to show that she improved as a doctor while learning at a different hospital.

Catherine has been unhappy with how the Grey-Sloan Memorial is being ran. Deciding that there must be a flaw in the ways they teach, Catherine has Bailey bring in a new person, Eliza Minnick (who is interested in Arizona), to head the residency program, which until now was Webber’s department (but no one told Webber, and he found out by how Eliza acted). None of the surgeons like the change, and plan to fight back against it, but the interns and residents are liking it because Eliza’s system is giving them more experience in the OR.

Stephanie hasn’t had much of a story line, but she’s been killing it and has been labeled ‘the best resident,’ so yay Steph!

April moves back in with Jackson, her ex-husband, while she recovers from her c-section. The two struggle with figuring out how to live together comfortably, and the awkwardness of dating new people after divorce.

Amelia and Owen decided to start having kids, but Amelia backs out and leaves her new husband after a pregnancy scare stirs up her emotional trauma (back when she was a junkie, she gave birth to a baby who was born without a brain). Amelia’s plotline has been a little messier than it’s needed to be. I’m assuming she is leaving Owen because the actress, Caterina Scorsone, is mega pregnant in real life and needs some time off once her baby is born. I love Amelia and hope to see her come back once Caterina’s ready.

Honestly, nothing advanced the story very much so far, aside from starting to change the residency program. At least there haven’t been any major tragedies to our cast so far!
