It seems like audiences are getting tired of the same stories coming back in various forms, like the string of remakes and sequels that are currently taking up our screens. Pixar is one of the companies that try to distance themselves as far as possible from this by declaring that most of the studio’s upcoming films will be original stories. And I’m happy to tell you about one of them: Coco.

1. The Story
According to Lee Unkrich, the director, Coco follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who sets off a chain of events relating to a century-old mystery.  The official story description is: “Coco is the celebration of a lifetime, where the discovery of a generations-old mystery leads to a most extraordinary and surprising family reunion.”

2.  Día de Muertos (Dia De Los Muertos)
Día de Muertos is better known as the day of the dead and is a Mexican holiday celebrated from October 31 until November 2. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars and honouring the deceased using their favourite foods and beverages and visiting the graves with these as gifts.

The Pixar team made several trips to Mexico to help define the characters and story. The director said, “I’d seen it portrayed in folk art. It was something about the contrast of skeletons with bright, festive colours that captured my imagination. It has led me down a winding path of discovery. And the more I learn about Día de Los Muertos, the more it affects me deeply.”

3. Staff
So far there is only one actor officially cast to voice a character: Benjamin Bratt. According to his Wikipedia site, he will be voicing a character named Eillot. Who will be voicing the main character Miguel isn’t known yet. The screenplay is written by Adrian Molina and will be produced by Darla Anderson.
