Johnny Depp will be in Fantastic Beasts 2!

Recently it hit the news that Johnny Depp will be playing a major role in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, starting from the second movie.  Possibly even playing the role of Gellert Grindelwald. Now I consider Depp one of my favourite actors, but I’m not quite sure what to think of this news.

At first thought, it sounds great: my favourite actor in some of my soon to be great movies. But somehow it doesn’t really feel good to have Depp in a movie about magic. Let me explain my issues for you.

I know Depp for his great performance as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lone Ranger and Tim Burton-directed fantasies. If you really think about it and start to compare the roles he played, you notice that all these characters are a bit on the loony side. They are not quite ‘normal’ characters and they always have a humorous side. I, of course, don’t know how far these characters are written that way (i think so) or that the humour comes mostly from Depp. Either way, Depp is always associated with humour and somehow I find that not suiting for a franchise like Fantastic Beasts, where all the attention should be towards the Beasts and the magic.

Because of his nature for playing wacky, zany, crazy characters in the last couple of years, I can’t imagine him as Gellert Grindelwald. Grindelwald is supposed to be the evilest wizard of this time before he got defeated and replaced by Voldemort. Grindelwald was also a complex figure, highly idealistic but marred by sociopathic tendencies and committed numerous crimes, including several known murders and eventually genocide. And I simply can’t imagine Depp in that role. Just as much as I can’t see anyone other than Jamie Campbell Bower as a young Grindelwald, but that’s just a personal opinion.

My conclusion is that really hope that this news turns out to be false. But even if these rumours are true and Depp will be playing a role in FB, I just hope it’s not the role of Gellert Grindelwald. Because that would probably ruin the movies already for a good amount of people while they aren’t officially started yet.

In other news, the first Fantastic Beasts is out next week!
