Now and Then begins with four adult friends reuniting in their hometown in Indiana because one of the friends is having a baby. In the summer of 1970 the then 12 year-olds made a pact that they would always be there whenever one of them needed them. The film cuts back and forth between 1970 and 1995 showing how one summer changed the girls and their friendship.
No 90’s tween movie would be complete without an appearance from either
Christina Ricci, Thora Burch, or Gaby Hoffman. When you combine all three with the oh so dreamy Devon Sawa you have a movie that is a must-see for all 90’s girls.
Watching this movie as a child these girls were friendship goals. It romanticized the notion that your childhood friends will always be there for you when you really need them, even if you haven’t seen them in years. It would be easy to say that this is the girl version of The Sandlot, but that isn’t quite true. Now and Then tackles subjects like death, divorce, war, and puberty more directly and honestly than The Sandlot. Somehow Now and Then manages to deal with these tough subjects and still be a feel-good movie.
One of the best things about this movie is the music. From The Jackson 5 to Stevie Wonder to The Monkees, it’s blast from the past. I can’t hear Knock Three Times without thinking of Now and Then and busting out Teeny’s signature shoulder shaking moves.
Chrissy, truth or dare?
Have you ever been french kissed?
Are you kidding? I don’t want to get pregnant!
Vietnam Veteran: I’m going to tell you something I wish someone would have told me when I was your age.
Chrissy: Oh yeah? What’s that?
Vietnam Veteran: Your parents aren’t always right.
Samantha: No shit.
Teeny: It’s normal for things to be shitty.
Chrissy: You know if I don’t eat every few hours I get nauseous.
Samantha:[narrating] Teeny’s parents were country-clubbers, never around really, typical upbringing for actors and pathological liars.
