I’m not sure about anyone else, but there’s a mix of emotions that runs through me when I hear “Carry On Wayward Son” playing for the road so far. I’m at once excited, nervous, and a little sad. It’s the end of a major storyline and the beginning of a summer without Team Free Will. Last week’s finale was no different as I waited to see what the world without God would look like.
The action, or inaction, as it were, starts where we left off. God is dying, his light is going out, and without God, there can be no Earth. While Sam goes to Chuck’s side, Dean rushes to see if Cas is okay and is relieved to find that it is actually Cas. Lucifer was ripped from Cas’s body, but there is no telling whether he’s alive or dead. I didn’t see any burnt wings anywhere, so I’m going with alive. Everyone is dusting themselves off when Rowena comes back into the warehouse, and I need to shop where she does because her hair and dress still look fab, knock-down, drag-out fight with a deity or not. Crowley states the obvious: The plan has failed. Rowena points out that Chuck isn’t the only thing that’s dying. The sun is going out. Without Chuck to stop her, Amara is killing the sun and therefore all life on Earth. Using some of the little power He has left, Chuck zaps everyone back to the bunker.

When they get there, Dean knows exactly what he’s gonna do now that the world is ending. Drink. Lots. Sam doesn’t accept that there is nothing that can be done, even as Dean says they can’t fix the sun. Give them something tangible to fight, sure, but they hit Amara with everything they had and it didn’t work.
Meanwhile, in jolly old England, a fancy-pants British Woman Of Letters we’ve never seen is watching the news. Her name is Toni, and she calls a little boy “The Boss” which, if you have kids, you know is absolutely true, even if you will never admit it to them. The children can never know how much power they wield. I’m generally not a fan of new characters being introduced in season finales, and Toni’s introduction seems to both take up too much screen time on the finale, and not tell us enough about her. I would have been okay with just the last scene and not knowing anything else. Other than a nice house and car, Toni has a secret lair and a weird wall of Winchesters. Someone calls her to tell her what’s up, and she packs a bag (including a familiar pearl handled gun), kisses the sleeping boy goodbye and is off!

Dean and Cas are making a beer run and Rowena is doing what she does best: Sucking up to powerful people. Ok, it’s not really what she does best, it’s the least interesting part of her, but it’s cute to watch her offer to make Chuck a spot of tea. Crowley doesn’t find it too cute though, and warns Chuck of her devious ways. Chuck figures hell, the world is ending, may as well take any kindness you can. Rowena and Chuck have some tea and talk about the struggles of parenting (which I feel so hard), while Crowley goes for the good stuff. Sam, on the other hand, is not willing to just give up and let the world burn. I’d be drinking with Dean, personally, but that’s just me. Sam’s plan is a bit different. They need to kill Amara. If Chuck is dying, then the balance between light and dark is shifting and that can’t happen.
On the way to get more beer, Cas hears what we (well, at least I) all have been wanting for him to hear for years. He is family, and he did the right thing by saying yes to Lucifer. Dean tells him that he’s always there with them, is the best friend Dean and Sam have ever had, and is their brother. It’s a good scene in which Cas gets validated and Dean admits that sometimes he and Sam get so wrapped up in their own shit, they forget there are other people in existence. I love this scene so much. Cas has spent this whole season, and arguably the past few years, being told he is a bother, a burden, or at best a tool for “real” heroes to use and dispose of when not needed. So having his best friend tell him he did the right thing and is always with them has got to help the depressed angel.

The beer run is interrupted by a call from Sam, which brings them back to the bunker to brainstorm ways to kill Amara. Chuck is reluctant to kill her, she’s His sister and He loves her, after all. He relents and tells them that light would kill the darkness, but they would need the light of 10,000 supernovas and He’s not quite up to creating them. Cas suggests souls, which are like 100 suns and Rowena says, if they can get the souls, she can make a bomb. They agree on this plan and Cas heads off the Heaven to get souls, Crowley to Hell, and the Winchesters go to Waverly Hills to bust some ghosts.
Amara, it seems, is not enjoying the end of all things nearly as much as everyone thinks she is as she walks through a park looking sad and regretful. She sits by an older woman who is feeding some pigeons and talks to Amara about family. Well, mostly Amara listens as the woman talks about losing her husband and her son wanting to put her in a nursing home to “die but without the fuss.” But hey, family is family. Even when you hate them, you love them.
Dean and Sam get to Waverly and Dean shows us he has a talent for Scottish brogues. Seriously. Jensen should maybe hop on over to my other show, Outlander, and then I can die from too much male beauty on the screen.
Anyway, they head in and we get to see a good old fashioned ghost hunt but with a super cool soul sucker-upper that opens when you say “Haggis.” We see a familiar Reaper watching as they head back. Turns out they were the only successful soul search, however, since someone raided Crowley’s stash in Hell and the angels decided to lock themselves away. Must be Tuesday. If there is one thing you can count of the angels to do, it’s hide away when things get tough. But hey, there’s still hope! Billie followed the boys home to their “super secret that everyone knows about” bunker and tells them that if they want souls, she’s the one to ask as she raids the veil and gets them a couple hundred thousand. The clock is ticking, though. Billie is gonna be reaping God in an hour. Rowena makes the bomb, and puts it in Dean’s chest. Dean has to be the bomb. Someone has to get close to her and he has the best shot.

After we get a glimpse at Toni landing in the states, we go back to the real action. Dean and Sam have a moment at their mom’s grave. Dean sacrificing himself feels different this time. He’s not rashly doing it to save Sam, but knows it needs to be done and is resigned. Chuck still isn’t okay with killing His sister, but there doesn’t seem to be a choice. Cas offers to go with Dean; he’s always going to offer. He will always be there for him. They share a sad look and hug as Dean asks him to instead stay and look after the most important thing in the world to Dean: Sam. He wants a big ass funeral with a Sabbath cover band, open bar, and Busey. Sounds like a good time, minus the whole “Dean is dead” thing. He and Sam share one more hug, and Dean finally admits that he loves chick flicks before Chuck sends him to Amara and the rest of them go to the Lazy Shag to drink til the world ends.

mara can tell right away that Dean is a bomb (I mean, we already know he’s the bomb, amirite? hehe). Neither of them have a choice now, Dean has to save the world from the destruction Amara is causing. Except she’s not. The balance is shifting, yes, but it’s not her dimming the sun and ending the world. She just wanted to hurt her brother. He betrayed her, but she will cease to exist just like everything else in creation. She didn’t want this. Dean talks to her about family and tells her Chuck doesn’t want her dead, either, so she zaps Chuck right out of the Lazy Shag and into the park for some family counseling with Dean. Who would have thought that Season 11 would be the season in which the Winchesters are the more balanced sibling pair? More than anything, both Chuck and Amara want to be family again. She is still pissed about being locked away for billions of years, but the world He created is beautiful and she can see why He did it. They hold hands and she cures Chuck, who cures Dean, and they float into the sky, white and black wisps, as the sun returns again. Before they leave, though, Amara tells Dean that because he gave her what she needed, she in turn gave him what he needed.

The trouble with this whole thing is that, now the sun is back (YAY!!) but everyone thinks it’s because Dean was successful and died (booo!!). Sam and Cas’s faces make me cry as they head back to the bunker. The words “I’m here for you” literally just make it out of Cas’s mouth as he’s banished to who knows where (Last time I think it was Perth) by Toni. Apparently the Men of Letters have had enough of the Winchesters fucking shit up, even if the do clean up their messes. Toni says she’s taking Sam in, and when he’s like “but wait..” she shoots the pistol she had trained on him and that is the last we see of Sam this year. The last scene is Dean in the middle of nowhere with no signal in the middle of the night, hearing a woman crying for help. He comes into the clearing and holy shit, it’s Mary Winchester!

BAMF: Dean Fucking Winchester
Dean has grown so much this season, and it was so evident in this episode. He was finally able to tell his best friend how important he is, and he was open with his brother. Dean had hundreds of thousands of souls in his heart, but saved the world through talking and convincing Amara to forgive Chuck and become a family again rather than destroy each other.
