Well, ‘New Girl’ is officially back and lets just say I wasn’t totally disappointed. There were some great laugh out loud moments and some nice references to past seasons.

Episode Synopsis:

When Cece and Schmidt ask Jess and Nick to be their Maid of Honor and Best Man, respectively, their first task is to plan the engagement party. But when Jess invites Cece’s mom to join in the celebration, Cece is forced to make a surprising announcement to Schmidt.

First thing that I know ‘New Girl’ fans were curious about for sure, was the opening credits because as we all know, when Damon Wayans Jr. joined the cast again last year, the show changed their opening credits which made the die hard fans furious. Now, unfortunately, they had to change them again, but I guess I’m ok with the quick title of the show and that’s it. Hopefully they return to the great sing-song opening credits we’re used to because that always got everyone in the mood for the show to begin.

The Gang:

Jess- Jess was her usual over the top self that we always love. She bursted with excitement when Cece asked her to be her maid of honor (like we saw the first time Cece asked her to be her maid of honor, haha). And the scene with her and Schmidt talking about how Nick sucks at getting any job done was so good! That was a great acknowledgment between characters. Also, when Cece reveals to Jess that she didn’t tell her mom that she was getting married, the long pause Jess gave, was priceless. So awkward and funny. One moment that I didn’t really care for was Jess falling down the stairs. I know that they probably did it, so that they could have Zooey hide her baby bump more while driving that motor wheelchair, but I didn’t think it was super necessary. Lastly, it was nice to see Jess stick up for Cece when her mom said she didn’t approve of Cece and Schmidt’s engagement. I love that Jess always makes sure to take care of her friends when they’re in distress.

Nick- Oh, Nick. What will we do with you. I always hope that the writers decide to one day make Nick less of an idiot, but I guess that part of his personality is what makes the show so funny sometimes. He makes me laugh because he has a hard time committing to important things, like being Schmidt’s best man and picking up Cece’s mom at the airport, and of course he had to already botch his first job by picking up a total stranger and driving her the whole way to the engagement party. I loved that he tried to sing along with Jess when she was trying to cheer Schmidt up and of course I was rolling on the floor, just seeing him try to dance that Bollywood number. Nick’s dancing always brings a smile to my face.

Schmidt-Schmidt was surprisingly more toned down then he usually is. Of course he can’t help being crazy when it comes to party planning, but I felt bad for him because he was really trying to impress Cece’s mom. We never really see Schmidt down in the dumps a lot, but I wanted the episode to end nicely for him in the end. Hopefully, he can get “Big Mama P’s” approval before the wedding. Weird side note: When Schmidt gave everyone a ring for being in the wedding party, I thought it was weird at first, but actually kind of sweet afterwards.

Cece- i kind of had mixed feelings about Cece in this episode. On the one hand, I was kind of disappointed that she didn’t tell her mom that she was engaged to Schmidt and she didn’t try to win her over more at the end, but on the other hand, I do see where she’s coming from. I don’t know how it is now with Indian families, but as we always see in movies and TV shows, people with very traditional families, are always being shunned for falling in love with someone of a different culture and it’s hard for that person to express their feelings fully to their parents; but I guess it would have been nice to see a shift in that and see Cece’s mom happy for her daughter.

Winston- Lastly, Mr. Winnie the Bish had a nice storyline. We’ve seen Winston put to the wayside in past seasons, and it was nice to see him have a decent storyline in the premiere of this season. He’s progressing slightly as a character (besides continuing his pranks), but I like that he’s doing his job well and isn’t thinking about a career change just yet. It was great to see his shoutout to the badger prank and his impression of Coach, but that end scene with him trying to tickle Jess’s foot while she was sleeping was too funny. He just never gives up.

All, in all, great first episode back and I can’t wait to see what we’re in store for in the upcoming episodes.
