After a lengthy hiatus, You’re the Worst finally returned to our TV screens on Wednesday night! It’s been a year since Season 1 ended with Gretchen (Aya Cash) and Jimmy (Chris Geere) setting aside their commitment-phobia to move in together after Gretchen burned down her apartment. And the show picks up virtually where it left off.

The season premiere, ‘The Sweater People’, joins Gretchen and Jimmy as they try to keep the spark alive in their relationship and avoid becoming a normal, boring, cohabiting couple. How to avoid succumbing to the monotonous aspects of couple-dom, such as lights-out at 10 and purchasing a cell-phone family plan? “Drugs and potentially dangerous sex acts.” And so we see the couple doing a ton of cocaine, and deciding to give “butt stuff” a try.

In the end, this rock-and-roll lifestyle is not sustainable, and Jimmy and Gretchen come to a realization that it’s okay to settle down just a bit. Realizing that they’re not necessarily destined to become the “sweater people” that Lindsay warned of, they opt to end their bender, and I for one couldn’t be happier. Perhaps it’s because I’m just a “disgusting normal” myself, but nothing about Jimmy and Gretchen’s hard-partying looks appealing. And I’m of a mind that normal and boring isn’t so bad.

Elsewhere, Lindsay (Kether Donohue) is trying to recover from the breakup of her marriage to Paul, but does so by plotting to seduce her soon-to-be ex. This backfires impressively when Paul comes to the realization that he’s just cheated on Amy, the chat-room girlfriend that he hasn’t even met IRL. This devastates Lindsay, who drowns her sorrows in Edgar’s homemade breakfast lasagna while wearing her wedding gown. While Edgar is successful in bringing Lindsay out of her funk, I’m pretty sure that Lindsay’s conniving isn’t over just yet. Especially since we last see Lindsay placing her soon-to-be ex husband’s used condom in the freezer as she takes out some Bagel Bites.

And that brings us to Edgar (Desmin Borges), Jimmy’s friend/house guest, a veteran who suffers from PTSD. Edgar is the moral compass of the show and my favorite of the quartet. I’m so pleased to see that Edgar is making headway from the funk he was in last year. He now has a job, and somehow comes out of this episode looking more mature and responsible than any of the other characters. The writers seem to be steering us toward an Edgar/Lindsay pairing, and I waver between hoping they connect, and reminding myself that Lindsay may be the worst of the worst, far too screwed up for any relationship at this point.

My favorite one-liners:

  • Who knows their address? – Gretchen
  • Do I look like a FitBit?! – Sam
  • Hey I love you, smooch smooch, now go get me some Bagel Bites. -Lindsay
  • Sleepy bitches lose their right to use normal people phones. – Sam
