The Mindy Project - Season 6

Jordin Althaus / Universal Television / Hulu

This episode starts with Mindy and Ben in couples therapy, where the Johnsons’ nosy – & at times racist – neighbour (heyyyy Black-ish reference) is trying to get them to work together to save their marriage. She’s scolding Mindy for not taking therapy seriously and for trying to bullshit her way out of it but also because she’s in love with Ben and doesn’t understand how anyone wouldn’t be delighted to be married to him.

Feeling frustrated, Min turns to her colleagues and asks if she’s a good wife; everyone says yes except for Jody who, in a rare moment of wisdom and clarity, tells her that she’s always putting her comforts and needs ahead of Ben’s and that her “compromises” are not actually what’s best for them as a couple. (Like if she wants Chinese food and he wants Indian food, she suggests that they both eat separately and then meet up to watch her favourite show – which is great for Mindy and great for Ben, but not great for Mindy & Ben.)

Because he’s an emotionally mature adult (sarcasm), Ben decides to test Mindy by inventing a head nurse position in Philadelphia and telling her he really wants it. She encourages him to interview and says they’ll work it out – WHICH IS THE CORRECT RESPONSE FYI – but he takes it as her not caring about their lives together. When she calls him after the “interview” she suggests that if this is his dream job he should take it and that he can move to Philly and they can take turns visiting each other – less of a correct answer.

Morgan was jealous of this job in Philadelphia and butthurt that he wasn’t called in so he decides to go to the hospital and ask for an interview. When he shows up, he learns that there is not job opening (well there is one, but for a janitor, and Morgan takes it anyway…)

While Mindy is dealing with the decline of her marriage, Anna & Jeremy have chosen to romantically decouple, much to the chagrin of everyone in the office, who believed in love again because of them. For once, we see Anna show some actual human emotion and we can finally confirm she’s not a robot. Anna invites all her “women colleagues” to a night of “alcohol drinking & camaraderie in a bar.” to help her deal with the feelings she’s having and to help her get back out there. The women on these show rarely get to be together, and this outing doesn’t exactly pass the Bechdel test, but at least there are no dudes on screen for a solid minute. A blonde neo-nazi looking guy sends over four drinks to the girls, and they’re all for Anna, because he wasn’t sure what she’d like. They invite him over so he can chat with Anna but when he puts his hand on her shoulder, she ~literally~ crushes his windpipe. The AMBULANCE has to be called.

The girls make a break for it and go outside, Anna realizing that she has a violent reaction whenever anyone but Jeremy touches her and that she might actually love him and he might be the one and goes to his apartment. Tamra hears all this and realizes she has feelings for Morgan and also leaves to find him. That leaves Beverly and Mindy, who suggests they use Bev’s senior discount at a diner, but Beverly is not down so she just leaves Mindy there alone to ponder why she doesn’t want to go home.

Anna makes it to Jeremy’s, ready to pour her hear out, but he’s already having meaningless casual sex with someone whose name was something along the lines of Slutvana…Anna quickly shifts gears and says she came by to get the bust of Queen Elizabeth back because she holds sentimental value.

Tamra has more luck, waiting for Morgan by his apartment and basically jumping him when he gets back and says there’s no job in Philly and that he’s not moving. They go inside with his 40 dogs and presumably get it on. I think Tamra can do better but if she’s happy I’m happy.

When Mindy makes it home, Morgan is there waiting for her, having broken her toilet. He tells her that there is no job in Philly and Mindy’s mind starts racing as to why her husband would have lied to her. They hear Ben’s keys in the door and Morgan hides behind the curtains. Mindy is ready to play along and confront him but Ben confesses the minute he makes it through the door.

He says that he created a real challenge in their relationship to see how they would handle it and spoiler alert they did not do it well. She says she was just being supportive, Danny told her not to follow her dreams and that’s what ended their relationship, she was just trying to not do that to Ben. He tells her that she’s in love with the idea of marriage but not with him, that she jumped into this because she loved Lindsay and he was good with Leo. (Let’s not forget she also jumped into this because he was on the verge of proposing an ultimatum but whatever…) Ben asks for a divorce and Mindy says okay without taking so much as a beat. She knew this was coming, and maybe she’s still processing his request, but it’s a little cold, like she’s only going through the motions.

Random sidebars:
Beverly mentions that she’s killed more people than Anna has dated and everyone sort of blows past this as if it isn’t news.
LEO TALKS NOW? Wasn’t he like just born? Those seems like perfect complete sentences he spoke to Mindy…how old does that make him? Is he 12…because we all know time means nothing on this show.
Mindy goes to CLIFF and asks him to be her divorce attorney, girl moves quick, also like why Cliff, of all the people?
I love Bryan Greenberg and he deserved better.
